The Division 2 set to skip Steam and launch on the Epic Store
Honestly, I wasn't too into The Division 2 to begin with, and not being on Steam kills any chance of me wanting to play it. Anybody else feel the same with games not launching on Steam?Tags: None

@Jokerthefoolio: Valve became complacent as a developer, but Steam has always been improving. Curation will always be a problem, but that's a price to pay for the freedom of choice they give us. Also, Epic doesn't even have user reviews, so no matter how you dislike Steam, that's another thing they already do better.
@TakahiroSama: There is absolutely no reason to release a store today lacking features that are already considered a given such as cloud saves and wishlists. You think if Samsung was to release their first smartphone today, they wouldn't include camera and wi-fi?
Steam did all the work to develop digital game stores, Epic just had to copy it, but they are too lazy to do even that. And your list of "good moves" couldn't be far from the truth: the bigger shares are only possible if the developer does an exclusivity deal, that's never a good thing. Giveaways, that's something every store does, even Origin did that and they are owned by EA, ffs.

Valve is in the market industry with steam since about 2003 or whatever and epic is just now releasing their market. It's not unusual that steam, for now, has more features than the epic store and only with time we'll see epic's dedication to the store and to really fully compete with steam. You're comparing an almost 20-year-old market against one that was newly released. And they made some good moves like the share they give to developers, the giveaways and matching steam's refund policy. It's just too soon to fully scope how things will pan out but that also creates the challenge that Epic's future decisions will probably base on the numbers they'll reach now, while they still trail behind steam. They could have waited more time to launch with more features but they also know most of their launcher userbase is currently based on Fortnite's popularity and if they wait too long, by the time they released, it could be too late if the new "popular thing" made people move on from Fortnite and their launcher. At least that's how I see this subject.

I don't even have a payment on my epic account I did download some free game but I haven't played them yet

Steam has a lot over epic and I respect that but I don't want a monopoly as it will just let valve stagnate with steam

A lot of those features that, epic definitely doesn't have were added a while ago. And in my opinion valve has become complacent with how successful they are. Epic's exclusively deals may be anti consumer and its features are lackluster but that doesn't meant that it won't encourage valve to make steam an even better platform for the consumer. Doing things for Linux users in nice and shows that Valve does do things for steam but they could definitely improve the curation and reviews systems

What, you think Valve has done nothing all this time? Steam is far ahead from Epic when it comes to features, Epic doesn't even supports cloud saves. Valve has done so much for PC gaming and they still do: Just today they updated Proton (a tool that allows Linux users to play Windows games) so it now launches games that were purchased OUTSIDE Steam. So if you bought a windows game on GOG, for example, Steam lets you play that game on Linux.
When did Epic ever did something like that? Never. All they did was bribe developers with exclusivity deals, which are massively detrimental to consumers.

You don't have to buy it through the Epic Store. Just buy from Ubisoft if you don't want to use the Epic Store. Problem solved. If it were on Steam you'd still have to use the UPlay launcher anyway.

I got the first Divsion game free when I bought a laptop with a Nvidea graphics card a few years ago.
The game was okay didn't really draw me in after 8 hours I dropped it so not had much intrest in the new one although if it was going cheap in a Steam sale I'd pick it up but I guess that's out of the question now.
I do think competition for Steam or any business is a positive thing although I really don't like Epic Store, I've heard refunds are hard to get even if you're eligable I'm not sure how true that is though.
My thoughts are I think a few people who want this game on PC might be put off buying it since the Epic Store is still in it's infancy and people are a bit skeptical especially us that have used Steam for years and don't like having 10 different game launchers.
I suppose if it doesn't sell well on Epic then it'll be brought over to Steam but I'll definitly be keeping an eye on how this all works out.

What do they need to do besides match pricing for devs? Steam is this huge wonderful ecosystem that does so much, you have instant support from other users in the forum, you have streaming and built in universal controller support for a wide range of popular controllers, you have chat, voice chat, etc...Originally posted by Jokerthefoolio View PostCompetition is good for the industry so I hope valve gets of its ass and actually does something with their platform
Epic has a better split for devs and little else... this move has nothing to do with what it offers consumers and there is no benefits for consumers in games switching to Epic.

PC fanboys are worse than console fanboys with the port begging. At least its still on the platform, lol.
That is exactly my point. Its all on PC, but its splintered.Originally posted by Misfit410 View Post
If Steam is DRM what do you think Uplay is? You don't get the game on Epic anymore than you could have gotten it on Steam, you get the privilege of downloading it via Epic then logging in to Uplay to play it, On Console you get a unified friends list, on PC we had this finally and now publishers got greedy and all wanted their own pie so they made un-user friendly platforms that are janky and broken and every time we turn around we have to start generating an entirely new friends list to play online. Epic is the worst platform yet, it offers zero support and piggy backs off of what steam built so their users can actually get help when they have issues, not to mention that since I've been using Epic Launcher (which I only used for Unreal Engine dev because Fortnite is a terrible game) user data has been released to the public several times, yet again just over a week ago.
I'm all for competition, but being exclusive to a launcher is not competition.
Division 2 was on shaky ground already due to the first one being an overhyped bore, this really hurts any chance of PC gamers buying the sequel.

Who claimed that The Division is "exceptional?" I certainly didn't. You are the one making judgments about games that aren't even out yet. A game that has not been released and has no RATINGS cannot be "overRATED." The game could launch in March and bomb big time. Would it still be overrated then? Or it could be a great game - who knows? I know who doesn't know - YOU. You have already written off a game as overrated that doesn't come out for 2 months.Originally posted by AvalonArt View Post
yyyyyeah no , not buying it , Division was never exceptional to begin with , same looter shooter , different setting.
"But I get what you mean. Every game is overrated except the ones you like, right?"
Absolutely not , there are great games that I don't like , and silly games that I love.

Awesome! A digital store that doesn't have user forums for feedback or support is great! Day 1 purchase.
