Achron. But not how you likely think.

See, Achron has a god damn brilliant idea behind it. It has an engine allowing you to manipulate the timeline in real time, along with something like 7 other players.

The developers basically came up with an idea, managed to make an engine that could do it and then went 'How do we demo this?' their answer being a 'Meta-time Strategy Game' but they were so focused on that mechanic, so limited in budget and so focused on making it functional that the result is nothing short of embarrassingly ugly.

The game is remarkably hard to control and that's not their fault. Meta-Time is a freaking nightmare to think with, it just is. Your brain is literally not built for thinking in ways that deal with it. The RTS part of it is ludicrously basic, they don't have experience in this design and it shows. They couldn't make it micro intensive because time manipulation, they couldn't make it macro intensive because time manipulation.

The hope they had was that it would show the meta-time engine's value and someone would licence it to make a proper game. But because of the above, it's never happened. To say that Achron upsets me, personally, is an understatement. The software design that lets you screw with the timeline is likely to end up lost to history, because they didn't manage to deliver a game that could get it the attention required.

Worse, they seem to have a pretty interesting plot going in their single player campaign, but I just can't stand playing the game to slog through it. It's the worst game to me, because I can SEE the potential there, and I'm fairly sure it'll never go anywhere. Imagine Superhot but with you and the enemies screwing with the timeline the whole battle, that's just one example of what we're never going to see now.

Couple dishonorable mentions to Space Hulk: Deathwing for failing to deliver on a solid premise and Company of Heroes 2 for a Russian campaign that goes beyond merely mangling history into being so bad about it as to earn a ban I actually feel is justified.

I can't think of a really BAD game I've played, but there are a few that were hyped up and they felt so much worse than I expected. The one that comes to mind is GTA V, I played it for about 5 minutes and the way it handled made me want to throw my controller against that wall. I calmed down and got my refund and that was that.

This goes back a few years but the original Age of Conan MMO had to be among the worst... the game was absolutely beautiful and had such great potential (including horseback combat) but it was so horribly broken out the door to the point of being not fixable.

Several of the bugs/issues included Assassin weapons being so short they could not do mounted combat since the weapons wouldn't reach past the horse; tier 3 crafting items not being in the game, and when they were introduced would instantly crash a server when harvested; weapon speed being linked to the animation so it didn't matter the actual stat on the item, but rather the attack used; along the same vein the Assassin backstab animation out of stealth was so slow you could literally side step it 1/2 way through and take no damage; players being PVP positive when switching zones while loading so people would just kill you while at the loading screen; an entire class being deleted from the beta and then the developer denying it ever existed (despite interviews prior) and the end game tier items being in the game for that class and not for the replacement class; speaking of end game, quests after level 20 (conveniently the level cap of the beta) being practically non-existent with zero end game content upon release; add to this all the typical broken skills and imbalanced classes that every game sees and struggles with.

Fixes to the game only broke it more and made it worse, for example, to "fix" the issue with daggers being too short, they extended weapon reach 25% across the board, making the balance even that much further in favor of larger weapon wielders (25% of 6 feet is a lot more size than 25% of 8 inch - 1 foot daggers).

The game was ultimately so bad I avoid anything from Funcom to this day (Anarchy Online by them was pretty bad as well, even though it was innovative so I'll give them points there).

I'm going to have to say Fallout 76. I'm normally really cautious about buying new games and don't preorder, but when a company releases a chain of games I've put over 100 hours into each and a friend (who I later discovered is a fallout fanboy) starts recommending you pick it up to play with him I let me guard down for the first time. Going forward everything I buy will be post launch.

I've played some odd little games as a kid, but through my innocence-tinted glasses I never really perceived the games as "bad" necessarily. One that does come to mind under this is Sonic '06. Watching the old Grumps playthrough, I see now that that game is BAD, but as a kid I had tons of fun with it, lol. I think it just liked running around as all those cool characters.

Since then I've done quite well in choosing good games to pour my time into, but the worst game I've played in recent memory is My Little Flufties for the Nintendo DS. My God is that game boring. It's one of those games that feels like it's dragging your soul from your body until you can no longer feel. My girlfriend had it as a kid, randomly found it while tidying her room one day and sent it to me as a joke. Never touch this game

I'll have to go with Warhammer Vermintide 2. It's Left4Dead 2 but worse in every possible way. And of course all of the in game progression is based around randomised loot-boxes.

                    • Chemist Tycoon on the PS2, Superman 64 on the N64 and a lot of games on the o.g. Atari. Man there were some shitty games on that system.

Relatively new game would be COD Black ops. That game was so poorly optimized for PC.

                        • Hands down the worst game ever, is Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker

Omg you have no idea how horrendously bad this game is. I loath Square, Square destroys virtually everything they touch these days, like they ruined the FF franchise, but they ruined this DQ spin-off even worse then the FF franchise if you can believe it.

Everything they can do wrong in the monster capture/training genre, they did wrong, and then some. No more randomized maps, no more random encounters, nor were the enemies even randomized, oversized 3D maps with nothing in them, only 7 maps in the entire fucking game I kid you not, enemy spawning locations were few and far between, after you beat a enemy it took a whole minute for it to respawn, they made the breeding formulas 4x harder to accommodate a only vs mode that Square didn't even attempt to stop cheaters in, really stupid trasition concepts like jet skis(yea damn Jet skis in a Dragon Quest game, I wish I was joking), ect, ect, ect, ect,

Hell the nicest thing I can say about that POS, is aleast the unnecessary 3D models of enemies look like the enemies they're suppose to look like(way better then the job done in DQ 8, another trainwreck square created to butcher the DQ name).

Well Square did get one thing correct, the title Joker, because this whole POS of a game is a damn joke. Square needs to really hand over DQ, and any pre-existing spin-offs back to chunsoft to create more games, because Square and lv 5 without Chunsofts close supervision, can make a DQ game.

                          • Tons of dump ware in the 90's, worst was a civil war "strategy" game my grandmother got me. Can't even remember the name, just that it was unplayable because five enemy soldiers could kill an entire army.

                              • A PSX game called "Slamscape," which I bought on clearance at Kay Bee Toys. The entire game looks like a bad acid trip, the sound effects are horrible, and it's very difficult (not in a good, rewarding kind of way). I ended up giving the game away just to be rid of it.
