I don't care much about how attractive the characters are I just want good game play and a fair business model. I don't need to enjoy every artistic decision to enjoy a game. Having said that, I do lean on the side that they should stick with a consistent design for character models throughout the series. No need to be exact, but they should remain easily recognizable.
The masculine/ugly discussion is pretty subjective and seems like a fruitless way to communicate what the actual issue is here.
These are iconic characters that have been around for years and fans enjoy seeing a familiar face(even if most of it is covered by a mask of some sort).
