  • Should I play Shadow of the Colossus?

I love Zelda; my favorite series. I love exploring and finding stuff on a large map.

    I love atmospheric games.

I hate when I can't block in melee centric games.

The idea of the only enemies being bosses seems bad to me, but maybe I could overlook this.

I hate seeing animals suffer (I've heard people say the colossi (?) act like wounded animals after you've hurt them).

    I like puzzles.

So should I give it a shot?

Edit: I have no doubt the game is objectively well made and great for those that are into games like it, my question is based on what I've said above, do you think it's for me?

Yes, it's an extremely unique game that really takes the concept of a boss battle and runs with it. Probably the best game of the trilogy from Team Ico.

If your expecting it to be breath of the wild, don't. The world is fairly empty compared to it, the game isn't your typical open world game. The game is if you took Zelda, stripped the typical dungeons, and then made the boss and dungeons into one. Very beautiful game and with a great soundtrack, however I have yet to play the game all the way through, because for me I don't really enjoy the world being pretty much empty and is really just there to get from one boss to the other. However if you enjoy just boss battles, you probably will enjoy this game.
If you like me, that's great! If you hate me, that's cool, just don't hide it.

I grew up as a huge fan of Zelda and other Zeldalikes. I believe it's part of what made me receptive to Team Ico games along with my appreciation for cinematic puzzle platformers.

Definitely play it, but don't expect to be in dungeons doing puzzles or out in the field fighting Moblins or whatever. The bosses are essentially levels and puzzles. It's much more focused on a specific experience in a fantasy world, and telling a pretty unique story in a relatively unique, minimalist way. The art direction is beautiful and the narrow focus on it's core ideas is sublime.

I've heard the remake on PS4 is trash and glitchy and that you should play the PS2 version, is that right? I've always wanted to give this game a go. Not sure which version is best though.

No way. Played through it three times and never encountered anything like that. It's 1:1 the same game with a few minor new options and additions, in a wayyyyy nice visual remake that's true to the original.

Though, if you wanted to have a more purist, original experience the PS3 version is the original game in 1080p + 60 fps. The same developers that rebuilt the game for the PS3 remaster did the remake. They understand the code as much as the original devs, if not more.

I have played every version of the game. I would say it's amazing game and if you haven't played it; you should! It's worth every battle. I rented the last one for PS4 just because the game has no really worth buying if you have played the other versions. It looked amazing, specifically if you have HDR TV. It's worthing amazing art piece and should be remembered as such!

In addition to HDR support, it's also worth noting that on PS4 Pro, you get the option of Performance and Cinematic mode. Performance is a perfect 60 fps with no frame pacing issues, and looks super clean. One of the smoothest I've ever played and probably the best results on any Pro supported game imo. Cinematic is higher res with some more visual FX, but it's a bit juddery and sluggish for my taste.

Entirely your preference, though. Just worth knowing.

yes. but not for any of those reasons, as it is a lot different than zelda or other games. if you try to draw comparisons before you play it, you will wind up sabotaging yourself. its just different. but very good.

Hmm.. I think I'll just get it when it's cheap and give it a shot. I think it's already pretty cheap on ps4.

oh thanks man, good addition. I'm probably not going to play it for a long time yet since I don't have a Playstation but I'll still keep this one close to my heart.

Definitely worth a go. And you can get it for a really good price these days on PS4. I say go for it.
