  • Videogame Novels. Love them or Hate them?

I would like to know how many gamers enjoy reading novels from their favorite videogames or if you don't like novels?
If you DO love videogame novels, care to share the ones you love the most and the ones you also didn't like (maybe they didn't respect the cannon or it was poorly written).

Personally I do enjoy reading videogame novels, among them the one I love the most was Starcraft: Shadow of the Xel'naga by Gabriel Mesta.
Mostly because I loved Starcraft: Broodwars and was my first video game novel. Sure I have also read other novels. From Starcraft, Diablo, Warcraft, Warhammer (not sure if counts, considering it's mostly a table top game), etc.
Also so far I haven't found one that I didn't like, I found most of the novels I read enjoyable.
( ´・ω・`)_且~ Would you care to join me for a cup of tea?
    Sips Tea Majeeeeestically!

Never read one. I'd give an Elder Scrolls, Fallout, or Mass Effect novel a shot.

I have read the first Witcher novel (if you wanna call it a novel), though. And I've read a graphic novel or two and a Manga or two about games.

I got the chance to read the Hellgate London manga and Starcraft manga (only volumes 1 & 2, need to order the 3rd one).

I also need to read more Elder Scrolls novels.

I've read a couple Mario and Zelda mangas and a couple Witcher graphic novels. Definitely recommend the Witcher graphic novels. The mangas... eh they're ok. I thought the Mario one was awesome when I was a kid.

Oh, I absolutely love them. They provide an interesting look into the franchise, with stories that might not make great video games but are still lore rich. I read all the Mass Effect, Dragon Age and Warcraft novels, those were my favorites. In the past, because the games went downhill.

The starcraft and Diablo novels were good. But the god of war 4 novel was meh. I think it can be hit or miss.

Mass Effect had a novel that acted as a prequel, don't recall the name but it was pretty good. Went into detail about Anderson's background and some stuff about Humans finding their place within the grand scheme of things.

I've read the novelizations for Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 and thought that they were interesting enough. I'd rather play the games to be honest.

I've only read a Halo novel like years ago so I can't really comment too much on this. The new God of War has a novel written by Balrog's dad

I read a couple of Elder Scrolls novels. I forget if they were set between Morrowind and Oblivion, or between Oblivion and Skyrim, and about says it all, forgettable.

I have read all the Resident Evil books and most of the halo books. The RE books were great for filling in the background details and some great adventures outside the games. I wish the movies were based on the books or games.

I've never read any, but I frequently hear recommendations for the Dragon Age novels, so I might check those out at some point.

The only video game-related novels I can imagine myself reading are the ones associated with Assassin's Creed. But ultimately, it depends on the quality and the reason for putting things in a novel instead of the game. Going back to AssCreed, they recently shunted a/THE major plotline that'd been building since the end of AC3 to the comic books, and that sort of thing outright pisses me off. It's like if A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back had been exactly the movies they were, but then someone deciding that Return of the Jedi should be a novel or a comic book and making the next movie about something else. But if it's just telling a story that's interesting but wasn't feasible for the game, like AC: Forsaken, I'm all for it. External media is great, just don't make them necessary reading.

Some of the Mass Effect novels are pretty good, Revelation, Ascension and Retribution are the best of the ones I've read. Deception was meh and I only got a short way into the Andromeda prequel so can't really comment on that one, I think it's called Nexus, I might give it another go one day.

There are some Star Wars books based on the KotOR timelines, Revan and Fatal alliance are the ones I've read, they are OK. But there are far better Star Wars books out there.

There are some novels based on the Elite universe that I wouldn't mind reading.

TBH I prefer to listen to audiobooks of video game novels if they are available.

The Warcraft novels are phenomenal. they have a team of elite writers that have peied together the lore into something cohesive that coincides with the game and patches. we need a Warcraft 2 already, but nothing about the lore or the novels falls short.

I read some of the Halo books and a couple Guild Wars books. I enjoyed them.

Also, I recently bought a book that is a collection of short stories having to do with video games. I haven't read it yet, but the concept seems interesting.
