It depends how many games pique my interest. If there's a collection, like there was on PS4 with Uncharted I'm.more inclined to act as there's more to play.

Though with the PS Vita I bought 5 games before I bought the handheld.

3 to 5 games for me, variety of genres.

Personally, I would need 20-30 GOOD games to consider dropping $300-500 on a single console.

Only one, but if console cost $500 or less, and this one game must be REALLY good. Zelda BOTW was game like that, so i buy Switch on day 1 when it came out

I bought a 3DS MANY years ago, and still to this date only own 2 games for it: Super Smash Bros and Zelda: Link between worlds.

I don't regret getting it, but I do wish I had been inspired to buy more games for it.

I'd say about two games I REALLY want to play.

I'm gonna get a PS4 primarily for KH3 and Persona 5. While I used to be a fan of GoW I'm not a fan of their latest trend chasing direction. Seeing gameplay videos shows me that it's clearly not a bad game but that it's also not GoW. It's a typical modern day open world action game with Kratos happening to be in it.

I'm really not interested. I really adore Pokemon and Zelda, but the new dumbed down Pokemon on switch doesn't interest me. I AM interested in Breath of the Wild though and I wanted to try Splatoon 2 before Nintendo decided that they have to charge for online play. I absolutely refuse to pay for the privilege to use the internet I already pay for, on any console.

Heck there's a lot I haven't played in the last 3 or 4 years having gone through a very long bout of unemployment. I haven't even played Bravely Second for example. I really loved the first one. I'd buy a system just for that one game even. I had to sell my 3DS XL a while back though since my laptop broke and it was my primary gaming machine. I had to get the money to cover the massive cost of a new one.

That's how it happened for me with my PS4. It was the only time I broke my rule and I bought it just for Persona 5 and Disgaea 5. Now I have like 15 games for it so it worked out.

I... kinda wish I had more games I wanted for that system because it's just sitting there collecting dust now.
Well now there's Smash. I'm also planning to get the new Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei 5, but it's not enough to justify buying a Switch. XD

I don't have any hard rules, but as a general rule of thumb I want to reasonably expect to pay at least the console's worth in games.

It depends. I don't own an Xbox One, and I have no desire to pick one up at the moment, but it also doesn't have many exclusives I care about. On the other hand, I recently picked up a Wii U for only two games that are Wii U exclusives. Tokyo Mirage Sessions and Fatal Frame V. To be fair, I got the system heavily discounted, and I probably wouldn't shell out $300 for two games. That being said, it really depends on how badly I wanted to play those games. If Dark Souls was an Xbox exclusive, I would buy the system in a heartbeat, because I know I am going to get 100's and 100's of hours of playtime out of it. It's all relative I guess.

Not so much how many games.. more how many exclusives and how badly I want to play them.

Nintendo is always a buy due to it being the exclusive home of many of my favorite IP's but the other systems have grown stale in recent years.
I was never an Xbox fan in all honesty since I always hated the controller design and the lack of exclusive appeal.
But I was a Playstation fan since the beginning and have unfortunately been loosing interest in recent years.
The Ps4 was a big disappointment to me.. even now I own less than 5 games for it and if not for my wife wanting one I still wouldn't own one to this day.
I don't know what the future holds for Playstation but I do feel like the Ps4 is the last time i'm going to buy a Playstation system.

Considering online gaming has become so dominant in the gaming world and PC is the only place where it remains free I just don't feel the need to invest in consoles anymore.. well except Nintendo ^^

For me, just one... I'm wanting to buy a Switch mostly for Pokemon Let's Go.

But at the same time, I haven't quite got the guts to shell out £200+ for the Switch just yet.

It really depends on if you can trust the platform to fill your gaming needs. Do they have trust worthy first party studio? What genres tend to show up on that platform? For instance PlayStation has well known first party studios and as a fan of JRPGs myself they tend to have a great amount of those so I can buy their console knowing it’s money well spent. Nintendo this gen has done well in both regards. Microsoft doesn’t do it for me in my opinion so I wouldn’t think about getting an Xbox until trends change.

One quality game is enough for me to buy a console with the promise of more down the line. Bought the Switch for Zelda and played that in wait for Mario, then played that in wait for Smash. Now I'm waiting for Animal Crossing.
