  • How many games do you need to justify buying a new console?

Personally, I can't justify buying a new console without wanting at least 5 games. How about you all?

The heck are you yapping about? You just made a giant list of grievances that could be found in any game, on console or PC. You recognize a game made by 'console programmers'? What does that even mean?

There is no number that would get me to buy another console.
A 360 was the last console I bought.
The Red Rings of Death on mine and my sons put me right off consoles and I became a PC gamer.

I bought a PS4 Pro so I could play Horizon Zero Dawn and Destiny 2 with my friends. Have not regretted it. I do remain primarily a pc gamer, but sometimes it's nice to jump on the sticks and kill some aliens with IRL buddies.

For me, there needs to be at least a half dozen games already released. I can't trust prospective titles to live up to the hype. This has actually been something that is drawing me more towards PC gaming, the knowledge that solid games are widely available.

The only reason I have for wanting to buy a console is to play with my friends, no one has a pc but Epic Games' new crossplay service looks really promising.
I am hoping for more crossplay games in the future.

Well I got a XboxOne JUST for the EA UFC series. Occasionally I've played some "arcade" games on it, but never anything else apart from the "free" month of EA access (with FIFA).

But if you want one at full price, on release date, you better think it through. I desperately wanted a Gamecube when it released here, but no launch game interested me (sorry Luigi) and I waited for months until Smash Bros Melee entered the fray. Luckily I got it at 20$ off and by the time I actually played it, the price was still the same (back in that day there were almost no discounts/sales).

This right here... to me, a game's replayability or play-time (without getting either boring or gaming-without-thinking (however fun that may or can be)) dictates the value of owning the console it's on.

I originally wanted to get a PS3 just for InFamous (ended up getting a second hand one from a work-friend and bought the game after within twelve hours). Turns out, Assassin's Creed IV got me my money's worth from it, though. I own all of a dozen or so games for the PS3 (mainly PC) and even fewer for PS4, and I don't think I've wasted my money at all.

It really just depends on the quality of the game and how hyped I am for it personally. If a no name console came outta nowhere but has pure exclusive rights on Persona 6 I would buy it in a heartbeat, take my money.

I bought a Switch at launch, when only Zelda interested me. It's the only console I've ever bought at launch though, every other time I've either been given the console at Christmas without asking for it, or bought it myself a while after launch when there's usually about 5 games at least I'm interested in.

Price of a console/cost of the games = minimum number of games.

How much longer do I have to wait for the PS4 to get so low I can justify buying it only for Bloodborne?

I mean, it depends on how hard those games hit. PS4 has a few games that look amazing. Horizon: Zero Dawn, God of War, Spider-man, K̶n̶a̶c̶k̶ ̶2̶, Bloodborne. It's not many but these are huge games. Meanwhile the Xbox has the Horizons series (which I love, but you can play them on PC).

I can't really put a number on it, because back during the seventh gen I was nearly tempted to get a Wii for the Resident Evil Chronicles games, Dead Space: Extraction, Smash Bros, and Fire Emblem, but the first three eventually all went multi-plat anyway. Even so, the five wasn't enough to justify getting a system I knew I wouldn't really like. I'm just sticking with Sony products these days as I find it's a safe bet, I love The Last of Us, and I enjoy the controller best.
