I wanted to reach out to you all to pick your brains about the following:
Game Philosophy:
Is there such a thing as “Game Philosophy” and how would you define it?
My take is what lessons can be learned and/or derived by playing video games. In addition to how can the reflection of these lessons impact, improve, and inspire the development of new games and existing games. I tentatively define “Game Philosophy” as the study of what the underlying fundamentals and principles a game is built upon i.e. to win, to explore, to understand a complex meaning, to compete, to inspire, to interact with others, to shock, to kill time, 30 seconds of fun (Bungie), overcoming tough challenges (Dark Souls) etc. I feel we have a better understanding of game psychology than philosophy in some cases, but think both are important in the development of games.
Game Psychology:
How would you define “Game Psychology”?
My take on this is what can be learned from the players themselves and studying their tendencies in addition to what/how it impacts them when playing a game. I think “Game Psychology” is used all the time in order to drive the making of better player experiences and/or better monetiztion methods, so there’s definitely the potential for good and bad in encouraging player tendencies. Again these are my personal takes that are always contingent on new data and information. What are your thoughts on “Game Psychology”?
I bring this up because I think we all play games for various reasons, but I’m curious to know how would you crystallize your position on the games you play and how the roles of its philosophy and psychology influence you.
Thanks,
-TCO
