  • Which Core element do you think makes a good video game?

To me what makes a good video game is its story and Character Development. I like to be immersed into the world like I am almost living in it myself. Some of my favorite video games are things like KOTOR, Mass Effect, Dragon age Origins, Fallout, Elderscrolls etc.None of these games had impressive gameplay or graphics but their story and character development were top notch.

    Which do you play for?

If story is the most important part of a game, then surely 90% of all games are eclypsed by novels, movies or tv shows? Which all on average have much better writing than games.

Personally, I feel Graphics play the smallest role in how good a game inherently is, Gameplay and story are the most important in roughly equal measure to me.

Immersive worlds and a great story are all need to keep playing. I can look past clunky mechanics if the world has sucked me in enough.

I like a balance of fun gameplay leading to nice story driven cutscenes. Grand theft auto 5 is awesome single player, and so was 4. I booked time off work for both and really enjoyed the experience, both playing and watching the story.

For me it's the Music, Atmosphere and it's World. Ashen is a really perfect example of that. The Gameplay and Story are mediocre, and depending on your tastes the graphics will range from beautiful to meh. But the Music and Atmosphere just draw you in, and the World you slowly explore and build up it lovely and diverse (for a 20 hour indie game).

It's the story. I can look past most defects if the story is great.

For me it's narrative, I'll put up with almost intolerant game play if the narrative is compelling. For instance Blood omen Legacy of Kain was a absolute pig to play but I just couldn't put it down, on the reverse Red Dead 2 I found to be a bit of a slog up until the final chapters.I'm a "have to see what happens next" kind of guy.

I'd say game play but some of those most played games that have lasted years have had progression in them from leveling your character to finding and improving equipment. RPG elements do help a game thrive for longer terms compared to games that have game play but still want yearly releases. I think that carrot on the stick to keep improving your character with shinier more powerful gear is a more attractive aspect than say akin to a game primarily involving game play to do the same activities more efficiently and less time consuming with more complicated and in dept knowledge and mastery of the controls. If anything the character and gear progression system achieves those things with less demand from the player because you are just playing the same way you always have but with inflated numbers to get better results.

I would love in my ideal game, is character/ world development and flexible combat, being able to see the world and character progress as the story is told, and having a combat system that allows me to approach the same fight in my personal preferred way.

The gameplay is the most important part of the game for me.
