  • Looking for a new game to pickup

Hey guys I'm a huge KOTOR fan, and I've played through them probably 30+ times each(restorations mods) and I wanted to see if there were any other games that are similar in play style, but more modern. I generally am more PvP focused, but something about KOTOR makes me want to play it over and over again. Any suggestions?

I think the best suggestion anyone can give you is to just play more video games that aren't necessarily 15 years old. If you are serious about game suggestions that mean something, narrow down a list for us to chose from a choice of titles as a sort of guessing game... or give us an easier set of rule so we can narrow a list down easier ourselves. Honestly, not even KotOR2 is similar enough to the first game.

If you haven't played it, I highly recommend the original Mass Effect trilogy. It's sci fi, from BioWare, and quite similar in a lot of ways. 1st game's gameplay is a bit clunky but the story is good. 2nd game improves on the smoothness of gameplay a bit but also makes some changes. The saves and choices also carry over between all three games. Small ones to big ones.

The Mass Effect trilogy is kind of the closest I can think of to KOTOR unless you want to dive into the MMORPG SWTOR. But a couple of others I'd suggest from the RPG realm, though a bit different in style are:

The Witcher series is also pretty decent.

Middle-earth Shadow of Mordor is pretty fun with the Nemesis system they put in place. Middle-earth Shadow of War expanded on that. That game too is fun until the last act, The Shadow Wars. That was stretched out for silly reasons, so it gets a bit boring. They did tune it up a bit a while back. But the game saver for both is the Nemesis system. That makes it fun.

I haven't had a chance to play it yet, but I have heard good things about Kingdom Come: Deliverance.

Have you played the Mass Effect trilogy? Seems odd to think there are people who haven't, but maybe.
Also the Dragon Age series, Witcher series, Bioshock series.
Jade Empire is very similar to Kotor 1, made by the same people but a Kung Fu setting (also inspired by the book "Bridge of Birds" by Barry Hughart).
"Deus Ex: Human Revolution" is a cyberpunk rpg with very similar gameplay.

If you get a basic subscription from EA Origin for $5 a month, you'll get access to all the Mass Effect and Dragon Age games, as well as Jade Empire, for no additional charge. I have had an Origin subscription for almost two years and for all the interesting games it has introduced me to, it is more than worth the money.

Well if you havn't played the old school classics, now might be the time. Baulder's Gate, Planescape: Torment, heck Arcanum: Of steamworks and magic Obscura! They aren't modern, but they are classical RPG's that KOTOR iterated on the core of. Having solid characters, a plot, branching and options.

Jade Empire is awesome... slow start but what a game ... not sci-fi but Martial arts + Fantasy

If you liked KOTOR, have you heard of KOTOR 2? It's like KOTOR but worse. But not that much worse.

If you're into retrogaming. DUSK more than deserves attention. It has been released 6 days ago and delivered on its promises and more!

I don't know that it's worse once you install the restoration mod. Kotor 2 introduces one of the best Star Wars characters ever, Kreia.

What's the restoration mod? New to me

Edit: yeah, I like the villains. I'd say KOTOR was a 9.5/10 and KOTOR 2 was an 8/10 for me

You should play through both games with the restoration mods, albeit the restoration mod for KOTOR wasn't nearly as large or impactful as the KOTOR 2

The Kotor 2 restoration mod returns the content that was cut from the end of the game, fixing the bland, hack'n'slash end we were given, adding more dialogue and more character encounters to the final product. It is readily available on Steam or other modding sites.
