That was the idea behind the name, when Square made the 1st game the company was almost dead, so they called their supposedly last game Final Fantasy, no one expected it to be this successful.

My Final Fantasy thoughts usually follow a pun line of thought.... When is the Final Fantasy going to be the FINAL fantasy.

My first RPG was FF8. I loved it. My favorite FF was 10 and 7. I do prefer the turn based combat versus what they are using these days. I remember when 12 came out, I just could not get into it because the combat was not appealing to me.

I did play 14 ARR and played end game content. It was fun but my MMO interests phased out due to life. 14 took some adjustment coming from the fast paced WoW and SWTOR but the graphics were great and, at least on my server, the community was awesome. I quit before the first expansion.

I agree with you about the FFXIV story line. It's so great! Heavensward storyline was my favorite.

I'm a weird one, I played all single player mainline titles (including their sequels, like FFX-2) and loved them all, except XII, I can't stand that game outside of the story, I don't like the battle system and Fran, I don't like the the dungeon and town design, there is really not much I like.
I'm fine with going away from random battles, still enough other JRPGs that have it, Octopath Traveler was great.

I still think that FFVII is the best of them all in regards of battle system and story.

My experiance with final fantasy as a series is limited to 10, a little bit of 12, 13 and 14 but i enjoy turn based more in general, though i did enjoy 12 and wished i played through all of it (if the disc didn't break on me anyways)

Scholar by far is my favorite in ffxiv and i enjoy the 14 story the most so far, though that might be more that i'm fairly invested into the game,

and for battle systems i don't really know tbh.

That's probably not the most popular opinion, but I definitely understand what you're saying. 3D graphics leave less to the imagination. Although the graphics never really distracted me, I remember when the game first came out I was a little disappointed about the departure from the "Fantasy" genre. But it didn't take more than an hour before I was hooked right into the game!

I went through this kind of awkward transition with 3D gaming because 2D games, especially Final Fantasy games were so... "clean". Even when something was obfuscated or outright hidden the graphics were so clean and intuitive that you'd eventually find everything just by playing. But when they made the jump to 3D they really had a LOT of trouble maintaining that same "clean" graphics style. Which is one of the reasons why I think I like the Kingdom Hearts franchise so much (despite the story being largely trash), because it's like they found the perfect way to translate that 2D "cleanliness" into a 3D form.

Final Fantasy on the other hand... eeehhh, not so much really. I always perceive 7 as being the absolute WORST of it though. Hopefully though that'll change soon with the upcoming remake.

VII was my first RPG, let alone first Final Fantasy game.
Given the issues Square Enix have had over the last few years, I think they would probably benefit from making smaller FF games that they can make in 2 years rather than 5
Smaller games can have smaller teams and they don't need to have AAA graphics - maybe even make a 2D sprite FF
Of course, they could use suggested smaller teams to make new franchises as well

I started playing FF with IV. It pretty much made me fall in love with the fantasy genre and video game music. I know it's straight forward and traditional but it's probably also my favorite story. For some reason I had a hard time adapting to open world games when they first got popular in triple A titles because I'd get bored without a clear path forward in story.

When they first moved away from turn-based battles I was really disappointed, but I stuck with it and I actually enjoyed the hell out of the FFXV battle system.

I'd have to say my favorite battle system is probably 3. I loved all the different skills from sabin's combos to gau's mimicry to materia /spells and summons. It was very well designed imo.

But regardless of all the amazing stories and combat mechanics, my favorite part of the FF series is the music. I still listen to playlists of the music from games. From soft piano pieces, to metal covers by the black mages, to remixes from ocremix...I will never have enough of those songs. 😍😍

I started playing Final Fantasy with VII and have continued to play the series since then. With the move away from turn base combat I'm not too disappointed, but I would like to see them maybe one day try going back to it. Action combat only makes sense as it's a bit easier for the new players to pick it up and helps gravitate the series towards the mainstream. For a lot of people they find turn base really boring, as it's a lot of menu interaction instead of actual gameplay for some. I didn't hate FFXV, but it was a huge disappointment in many departments. The story was meh and none of the characters were memorable. The graphics and combat were great though. Never played any of the online games unfortunately, MMOs are my cup of tea.

I've played IV, VI-X, XII, XIII, XIV, & XV.

XV is probably the most disappointing game I've ever played from a story standpoint. I was really let down by the plot or lack thereof. There were things I enjoyed about the game though.

XII is probably my favorite from an art direction standpoint. I love the judges...so much so I bought that 1:1 Gabranth Helmet SE sold back in the day for WAY too much money. Also the Gabranth full body statue..and the figures...and and and. XII is probably my second biggest disappointment from a story standpoint. Amazing first 1/3, then it jumps off a cliff.

X is probably my favorite story. Love bittersweet.

VII is probably my favorite overall with IX very close behind.

I love XIV. Been a sub since day one of the relaunch. On Sarg server. Mained a Dragoon in 2.0 and 3.0. Now I play warrior primarily.

I've played most of the early ones, with the exception of 3, up until Final Fantasy 7. God did I love that game. But after that, I guess I just grow out of the series, because the random fight every five feet stopped being fun and just became tedious. I got back into the series with 12, the updated combat system as a god send. Annnnnd then I played 13, AKA the 22 hours tutorial, and that killed the last of my love for the series. The only way I would get back into it at this point is if they made a single player version of the A Realm Reborn. I've played that one and it's decent, far too slow, yet not too bad, but I'm not paying a monthly sub just to play it.
