Can't say I've ever been scared in a Video game but some may Surprized me (ala Jump Scare)
The Thunder in Morrowind makes me jump --- especially when playing with head-phones.

I dont remember being scared, but Silent Hill was very disturbing .... Did not know a video game could touch that nerve.

Conflict Desert Storm. The tanks in that game were so intimidating and I refused to play when one was around.

The original Doom actually scared me. Sure, it was a lot of fun just shooting demons and so on, but sometimes I'd think I killed everything, and there would be this one demon somewhere, grunting/roaring loudly at random intervals. It would genuinely get to me as a kid. I'd try and hurry and find the exit so I could get away from the sounds. Plus, I'd hear a door open and then, invariably, a demon would pop up behind me and I'd have to fight it. I was on my toes a lot for my first time playing that game.

Funny to think, but I actually got quite scared on some random levels that were really tough, no matter the game. Some random Looney Tune game on NES got my heart and adrenaline pumping like no other, hah!

But first time I was actually really fucking scared was Silent Hill. Just absolutely stunning experience back then and an experience I will never forget and most likely will not get again. I could barely play it, but I still had to... Such a great game! Classic for sure. Another one was original Resident Evil.

Doom on SNES. Must've been the sounds the creatures made. Everything scared me when I was a kid. My cousin brought Resident Evil over one day and he had infinite rocket launcher and everything, yet I still managed to be a giant weenie about it.

Now I only get scared when I get the electric bill in the summer or if I don't pee right for a week or something.

When I was a teenager my bedroom was in the basement and there were two full-sized windows right at ground level. We lived out in the middle of the country so at night it was like staring out into a black abyss. It goes without saying that every time I glanced in that direction I assumed there'd be a pair of glowing eyes hovering menacingly, or the face of that gremlin from Twilight Zone pressed up against the glass. It also goes without saying that it didn't take much to scare me, nevermind the fact that at the time the industry was right in the middle of the golden age of survival horror...

...but Silent Hill. I mean, that game still haunts me to this day. It wasn't shit your pants jump out of your chair scary, but real scares stick with you, and that first encounter in the alley, the school, that hellish hospital... I still remember it all so vividly because there was nothing quite like it. I really wish they'd reboot that series!

I grew up watching horror movies like Firday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Hellraiser, Leprechaun, Candyman, The Shining, The Fly, Holloween, Children of the Corn, Child's Play, Poltergeist, Aliens, Tales from the Cryptkeeper, etc etc. watching those as a child I grew pretty numb to horror in general well before my teen years. The thing is though the one game that got me was Dead Space, it was too cheap and cheesy with the horror giving you the game music and background noises then suddenly those sounds would just sneak away to dead silence then BOOM something jumps out at you and queue the screeching violins. That crap would get me every time and I hated it lol.

Yeah, goddamn Silent Hill, stuff of nightmares honestly! It's aged pretty poorly, so I guess many people can't comprehend how terrifying it was. Still is to me.

Sad to see such a magnificent game series go down the shitter. Hopefully IP goes back to developer who actually cares!

DayZ....i hate the game cos the lack of development but there is no denying the effect it has on you.....got into a fire fight and all seemed well after i killed my opponent and looted the body but after i was shaking so much i had to let go of the mouse for a bit....and my friend literally cried when he was held up for the first time....he said after that he dose not understand why he was so scared after all it is just a game....those where the dayz....now that we are used to it we are not effected as much....still shake from time to time but not as bad. No other game has ever made me jump or frightened me regardless if it was a horror or a jump scare.....pitty DayZ died off and even with the update it is still not enough to hold my interest anymore...too little to late.

                              August 1, 1996

Resident Evil 1 release date in Europe.
Home in a dark room. Alone. Quiet.

Corridor on the right side of the mansion lobby. Dogs through the windows...

I probably caught 3 feet of air the first time.

I never got very far in the first Resident Evil as a kid. The atmosphere and bad controls followed by my first zombie made me drop the game.
