Resident Evil 2 on the PSOne. Specifically, the interrogation room in RPD with the two-way mirror. A health spray on the desk. Nothing happens if you don't touch the health spray. But pick it up, and a Licker smashes through the glass from the opposite room.

That scared me so bad I yelled out loud and threw my controller. Since then stuff only really ever creeped me out. Not really scared me, until Alien Isolation. Good lawd that game. That game has a pucker factor of 10.

Oh it was the first Resident Evil, no doubt about it. I was still a little kid around 8 years old when I played it and I was scared shitless LOL

It would have to be the original Resident Evil - as a kid just watching my cousin play it i was scared. The few times i would attempt to play it by myself would result in the game being turned off - It also didn't help that the start up music for the Original Playstation was creepy sounding on its own.

The first game that scared me was the original Silent Hill, and man the entire story of just why it scared me so badly is a rollercoaster ride.

It was my first summer being allowed to stay home alone instead of having a babysitter (my brother lived across the street, so it wasn't like they just left a 9 year old home alone in a bad neighborhood; I had help close by if needed.) and I remember I had rented Silent Hill from Blockbuster. I had the house all alone to myself, and was just past the part early on in the game where you are in the elementary school (one of the most iconic places in the whole series). So what would've been just a normal amount of creeped-out was made 10x worse though by the fact we lived near a trainyard at the time, and I'm not sure if anyone here remembers Ángel Maturino Reséndiz (The Railway Killer) or not but not only was I getting scared by the game, I was home alone and heard a thud just outside the window and was CONVINCED it was the dude trying to get in.

I just ignored it and kept playing, but being scared by both I ended up climbing up into the attic and basically shelter-in-placing all day. To this day I don't know what that repeated thud outside the house was, but I know that was definitely the first time I got scared by a videogame, even if I did have childhood fears of a murderer aiding in that fear lol.

Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire on the N64. The dianoga in the sewers. I didn't expect it, and as a little kid seeing weird tentacles start flopping down on top of the main character combined with that roaring made me immediately pause the game and lunge for the power button. To this day, I haven't gone back to that game or level despite knowing it can't be as bad as my memory built it up to be.

I have a sequel of that game installed in my nightmares. I've played it twice so far.

I was going to post this because the first times I played that demo I had cheats on. I forgot what the invincibility cheat was and I was scared to walk up the stairs in E1M2 because I no longer had the upper hand. Maybe that game was not suitable for a 6-year-old but at least you were killing demons, not people.

I had played so many scary games as a kid that I didn't really believe any game could be scary to me anymore, until I played Thief: Deadly Shadows. That first time is horrifying, and the buildup to that was done perfectly. Too bad it's not very replayable since it's always the same and your second time through you know what all those sounds are.

I think the first game that scared me was Resident Evil on the Playstation. The moment where the dog jump through the window unexpectedly while going down the hallway in the house was the first time I was scared in the game.

Good question... I cannot pinpoint wich was the first, but the most memorable for me was Dead Space. The first one that is. The whole way it was designed is still a masterwork if you ask me. The heavy influence from Event Horizon and The Thing was a perfect match to take the sleep from you! I also got the artbook and the first novel (wich I HIGHLY recommend!). Of course there are a lot of great horror games out there in all shapes and colors but Dead Space remains my favorite.

I've been playing videogames since the late eighties but the first game that actually scared me was Alien Isolation in 2014. Had to stop playing it in the evening, because then I was up all night.

For me, it was playing interactive movie version Nightbreed on the Amiga. Getting chased in the graveyard made me crap my pants for some reason. That or the numerous ways to die in Personal Nightmare on DOS.
