DayZ ... I'm not really into horror-type games, but the survival/post-apocalyptic setting really appealed to me. Damn that game can be scary when you are doing your thing... searching, scavenging, surviving and all of a sudden you are faced with those damn screaming zombies

That's a great question. For me in would be when I first started playing Amnesia the Dark Descent. I played it late at night around 1am. A decision I regret to this day. But also not, because it was very unique.

Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage. The sharks in the water level. Otherwise, probably DooM.

Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly scared the crap out of me when I first played it. I couldn't even finish!

I don't really play much horror or psychological thriller type games. But I remember watching my sister play devil may cry 4 scared me. Just the first area or so since I have a fear of clowns and there were those jack-in-the-box clowns with chainsaws or whatever they were in it. First game I played myself that scared me was probably actually recently when my boyfriend wanted to watch me play Amnesia: The Dark Descent. I reached enough into the game where I got stuck in a room full of like bookshelves and then like had break a hole or something and then this like Pink thing or whatever touched me and I just ran the hell away! Nope, nope, all the nope. Played again a few days later but got freaked and quit again when got to some lab I think and music and such freaked me out.

Ooph, I don't know if I can recall the FIRST. But I think the one that comes to mind is Silent Hill 2 when an armless man crawls out from beneath a car right beside you. Scared the dickens out of me.

F.E.A.R. Was the very first game I couldn't play with the lights off.

The first game that terrified me was a double wammie.
My friend and I were playing "FEAR" We were smoking a lot of weed (in Amsterdam so the supply was unlimited) and after completing about 2/3 of the game with each of us playing a level then passing over the mouse it came to the point I had to pass it to my friend...

    "Your go mate"
    "....no...it's ok, you carry on.."
    "No...you go for it...I...ummm....."

My friend then quickly reached across me and turned the monitor around and we both sat back and sighed a HUGE sigh of relief.

    That girl.....

The first game that really scared the hell out of me was the Friday the 13th on NES. Just not knowing when Jason is gonna jump you and the zombies was terrifying for me.

The screamer in Ocarina of Time and that other screamer in the Biohazard Wii remake.

ah the chainsaw! I feel the old fear creep in whenever I hear that sound in a game, ever since re4 like you say.

Dino Crisis 1, the T-rex appearing, scared the stuffing out of me! Ran like hell to the end of the walkway, just to find out I had to shoot the rex as it tried to eat me, all because the door was locked!
After that, Parasite Eve 2, Alien Isolation, The Evil Within, scary!

Hilariously enough first game that scared me was the original Descent. Due to the screeching noise the robots makes when they spot you.
Working...
