  • When it comes to watching games on YouTube/twitch what do you like to watch?

I’ve recently been on a nolstagic type binge and have been watching a lot of old gameplay. It got me thinking: when it comes to YouTube and/or streaming services, what type of games do you typically watch?

Given the current climate of AAA titles and their lack of value V fun or entertainment value, do you think we will see a surge in indie gaming or retro gaming?

What do you wish there was more of? Do you think streamers and content creators should strictly game or incorporate some sort of niche to their content/streams? What would you want to see more or less of?

I find the the whole concept interesting and the situation with most higher up developers intriguing as it definitely affects the way the community games. Kinda wanted to see what everyone else things because, honestly, I could see a resurgence in older games making a comeback since technology now allows us to share those games more intimately than previously before.

I'm a gamer. I tend to play video games, not watch others play them.

Aretheus I can understand watching competitive gaming, like you say is the same as watching a sport.

I liked Kay Plays years ago for Souls Let's Plays, or ChaseTheBro for PvP in Dark Souls III - along with highlight and edutainment channels like Limit Breakers, VaaityVidya and Sun Bros.

Anything for Street Fighter V whether it's knowledge, history, pro ranked match replays, tournaments or salt videos from DSP and LTG.

Sometimes I'll watch James & Mike Mondays streams on AVNG/Cinemassacre if I'm interested in the game.

Honestly I've never been one to watch people play games online. If it's me watching a friend or my brother on the couch, yeah, that's different, but I don't really use Twitch or Youtube for video game viewing. However, I do often watch certain streamers or professional tournaments of competitive games I like to play, like Hearthstone and Rainbow Six Siege.

...actually, come to think of it, I do watch play throughs of PC games I'd never play but really want to since I'm not a PC gamer. For example, I recently watch Pewdiepie play DokkI Dokki Literature Club.

I used to watch the guy who does Gamesins on Twitch but his moderators were assholes so I left. He's really the only person I've ever watched for more than ten minutes, live. I do watch Nico B on Youtube, as I find him to be a humorous, nice, guy, who adds a lot to his playthroughs by doing voices and adding his comedic commentary (I also help support him on Patreon). The only other time I watch games on Youtube is when searching walkthroughs instructing me how to get past puzzles - in which case the only commentary I want is suggestions for solving the puzzle and explanations for completing each step.

I have a rotation of streamers on Twitch that I enjoy watching. Singsing has a fun Dota 2/variety stream with friends and they have very solid chemistry even if they want to rip each other's throats out sometimes. I'll catch some other pro Dota 2 players once in a while like Zai, Arteezy, CCnC, etc. I've also been enjoying my time with Valve's new game Artifact lately. The game has a great tournament system so streamers have been doing stream tournaments where viewers can join in. So I've been going to various Artifact streams for that reason. Then I'll also watch Dota 2/CSGO/Starcraft 2 tournaments if they happen to be going on.

I don't really like to watch people just play games, there has to be something unique about it. I sometimes like to watch speedruns of games I know for the obvious reason that it's a way of playing that's completely unpredictable and strange to a casual player. Also there's a streamer called Lorerunner who researches the background lore and story of a game and then does commentary on the lore as he plays through it, with frequent interactions with the chat who often have interesting questions regarding the topic, or sometimes even correct him when he makes a mistake in his analysis. There are games that you'd think wouldn't even have any lore to speak of, that do, and he finds that out and theorizes on the gaps.

I think there are 3 common reasons for why I watch twitch streams and Let's Plays.

    1) The game is an esport I'm interested in along the lines of Dota 2 and CSGO. These games have low skill floors and infinite skill ceilings so it's always interesting to see what it's like for the best of their best to show off their craft. It's really no different than watching a professional sport game.
    2) The person playing has an incredible personality or the game is designed to elicit some emotional reaction from the player so it's fun to see how different experience games. The best example of the former would be when DDLC exploded last year and everybody was watching Let's Plays of it just to see the people falling into madness.
    3) I just turn on a stream to act as background noise while I'm doing something else. No different than listening to a music playlist.
