Battlefield 3 and to a lesser degree BF Bad Company 2........yub, come at me!
I'm an old and oldschool BF player, I started with 2 then tried out 1942 and Vietnam.........because back then you could buy used copies and both games had awesome mods like Forgotten Hope.
(Aside from playing games like Arma, various combat Flight sims, RPGs, and other games that do not pertain to this discussion.)
So I didn't like some of the stuff that came in with Bad Company, namely the huge unlock system and everyone could have every weapon.
I mean a US soldier with an AK as his primary starting weapon, unless he's spec ops or in dire straits is a bit silly.(Granted Bad Company was a bit silly at times.....and in a good way.
)
Now the latter is totally fine for me in a game like the original OPF or Arma where you can find yourself behind enemy lines running short on ammo.
The bigger issue however was the unlock system that just went a little overboard in my tastes, where it really punished new players, they did less damage, had less options on top of not knowing the maps or maybe not knowing how exactly to play the game.
It also kills experimenting with roles, for example why should anyone let "the Noobie" drive the tank, after all he can't run it as effectively as a veteran player, since he hasn't got a coaxial Machine gun to engage infantry, nor has he got smoke grenades to hide etc.
I think that's where it got really off-putting to me, as before in BF2 that was one extra weapon, but in BC2 they actually cut tools that you needed to fulfill your role from the starting content.
Medics couldn't heal they had to unlock the medic box first, they couldn't revive, they had to unlock the defibrillator first.
Same goes for engineers who couldn't repair until unlocking, no AT mines until unlocked.
Vehicles, no smoke grenades, no coax, no good optics, etc.
To me an unlock system is complete poision to a competitive game, the only thing that should decide a challenge between two players is their skill, not any ground equipment.
The system's goal is to give veteran players an edge over new players, one that is not necessary, because generally the veteran players already have an experience-based skill advantage over the newer players.
In the end they are a barrier to entry for new players, a thing that keeps new people from joining the community.
And if one says that a game needs an unlock system to be interesting, they are admitting that the game itself is lacking, that the gameplay isn't good enough to have you come back time after time.
I mean look at the first Battlefields and even the mods for BF2, no progression systems at all, and yet people played them over and over.
I enjoyed playing BC2 but the unlock system killed it for me, because you never could match up to the veterans.
You were always at a non-skillbased disadvantage.
As for BF3, it had the same, but the netcode was worse and same goes for client-side hit detection.
Also a few friends had played it and it was the first time Dice chose to go crazy with the nerfbat. All of them liked it at the beginning and all had stopped playing half a year later.

I agree to an extent. Battlefield 3 wasn't bad in my opinion. I wouldn't even argue that it's overrated. I do agree that it seemed like a step back from Battlefield 2 and other prior installments though. Battlefield 2 never gets enough love.

Koolaidman Interesting point and I do agree to an extent
I don't think the game is bad per se, but I do thinkt that without the unlock system in place it would be better.
As for it being a step back in comparison to BF2 I would agree, the Class system in BF2 worked great for the most part with no one man armies or OP classes and the lack of mod support in modern Battlefields is really sad.
There were some pretty fun mods.......both serious and those decidedly less so.....

While "didn't like" is not entirely accurate... I did want to say both God of War 2018 and Uncharted 4 were both ridiculously overrated. I can rip both titles apart on a gameplay and story level, lol. I would say the two are solid 8s though. Again, "didn't like" is pretty strong. I liked them both. But they are far from perfect games or even being the best in the franchise."You can take the politics out of the forums, but you can't take the snowflakes out of the internet "

I might spark an outrage with this one but I absolutely dread the fallout games, I couldn't get into fallout 3 or New Vegas no matter how hard I tried.
Metal Gear Solid is another series that I absolutely cannot sit and play, maybe I'm just really bad at stealth sims.
I've had love for most RTS games such as Empire Earth, Age of Empires, Age of Mythology and Stronghold, but if I had to sit down and play an hour of Civilization, I think I would actually cry.

Partially agree, I like Morrowind but most of the others feel a bit unfinished, I had that with Oblivion, felt great with the first playthrough.Originally posted by Tuklofeign View PostThe Elder Scrolls saga. I like RPGs but that series just never did much for me.
But then I modded it, and after that base game felt bad.
And Skyrim..........somehow something was missing, could be the too simplistic character/roleplaying system or something else.
Edit: HxCary2
there might be a lot of oldschool Fallout Players that might agree with you about Fallout 3 or New Vegas.................

I loved the God of War franchise, with it's chaotic action, colossal boss fights, gore, sex mini games and nudity, it was one of the most video game video games out there.
Now it's a walking simulator with bad combat that is hailed as a masterpiece.
I hate this game and the dangerous precedent it sets for action games.
It makes me very afraid for a possible Ninja Gaiden 4 and a potential Devil May Cry 6.

Like God of War I was a massive Tomb Raider fan, but this reboot and it's sequels destroyed the franchise for me.
I loved Tomb Raider back when was all about exploring, puzzle solving turns and playing as a charasmatic, witty and sexy female action hero who faught dinosuars, dragons and even gods, but now due to gamers having low standards and being gullible for walkie talkie feels-a-thons, it's now a generic cover shooter/Uncharted Clone with Lara being a boring chew toy.

Agreed, I could never get into that franchise either, though I've heard Infinite is a great game.Originally posted by Inside_Smoke View PostBioshock. just find it really generic and uninteresting.
Horizon Zero Dawn, I played through the tutorial (a bit drawn out imo) then never got into it. Maybe I'll give it another shot one day.

The Dragon Age series for me has been quite a disappointment.
Maybe because i"m spoiled by other CRPGs but, it feels like a water-down take of a CRPG with little new to offer.
I never got the hype or praise.

FF15. I thought it combined everything tedious about real life with everything tedious about games. Real time driving, eating and sleeping *and* unending generic fetch quests? Where do I sign!Like missteps at wit and occasional intelligence? Follow me on Twitter

For me, it is Horizon Zero Dawn. I have tried to play this game and I just don't see what the hype and big deal behind the game that everyone else sees. To me, it is just another run-of-the-mill open world game that uses stealth mechanic as it shtick. I don't care for the characters and story either.
