The newest one is inspired by more of the Dark Souls type games. I would say that the newest one also digs a little deeper in the mythological world that its setting is based on. The original trilogy was a little shallow in that regard IMO. Meanwhile this game is willing to expand on its lore. Also what I found impressive is that the game goes for the one scene shots you see in movies. The game avoids "loading screens" and i put loading screens in quotes because the fast travel, while not appearing as one, is basically a loading screen.

I feel like Skyrim suffers from a bit of being absolutely great when you're kind of young and getting into that sort of game, but then you back off and look at it objectively and it's really not all that amazing. I spend way more time trying out random mods then actually playing it anymore, if I even have it booted up.

I just gave Oblivion a second try a couple of months ago and dang near 100% it. I had tried it a few years ago and left quickly, but I forced myself through the first few hours of it again and really got into it. It helps a lot to have a wiki nearby though. And the enemy scaling is something no amount of time will cure.

Leaving aside my somewhat ambivalent attitude towards fighting games (OK... I have Dead or Alive: Last Round and I'm disappointingly bad with Mila... who is the entire reason I got the darn game...!) and multiplayer online (only) shooters (sorry Fortnite, you look quirky, but I don't 'get' online shooters)...
Dark Souls - the lack of superficially discerning story kind of bothers me, even though I'm aware it's really deep
Bioshock series - I 'unno, I got the first game, played it a bit and nothing happened for me...
Fallout series (well, 3, NV & 4 at any rate) - I really should like this formula, but I can never play them for much more than a couple hours before getting bored (Skyrim, though, not a problem)
There are other titles/series, like MGS, FF, RE, Halo and so on, makes me wonder whether I have any taste at all...!

Rockstar games. Imo Max Payne 3 is their best game but I don't like GTA or Red Dead games.

Garrett I guess you'd rather sneak about, clout other people over the head and throw some holy water on the water arrows to get rid of those pesky little Zombies?
I found ME interesting, story wise....but the characters were a bit strange at times.
I could also say similar things like you about MW4, Mechwarrior 4 that is, I loved Mechwarrior 3, because it felt so spot on and had so much depth in it, that Mechwarrior 4 was a distinct letdown afterwards.
You couldn't leg a mech for salvage anymore, mechs and parts weren't lost and you didn't have to look after your parts and ammo anymore, which in MW 3 made sure you tried out different weapons.
It also made you feel more like a unit behind enemy lines who has to rely on salvage to stay afloat.
Also there was no bounce to the step of your mech, that made you choose between going full speed or aiming precisely.
And no Adverse effect of unbalanced Weapons, if you had one AC-20 in one arm and none in the other the backblast would drive the torso back on the side the weapon was on.
Which you could counteract though.
The game on the whole also game looked less serious, less real to the rather gritty Battletech universe and more cartoonish, not like a dark graphic novel, but more like a saturday afternoon cartoon.

DE Human Revolution, BioShock 1-2. Same issues - kinda unsettled atmosphere, "meh" gameplay, boring story, dull, flat and unsympathetic characters...
For me, in a more or less rpg or story-driven games it's a no-go.
And my "favorite" - Undertale. I must admit, Toby Fox is a genius story and gameplay designer, he made SO MUCH with so little... but the game's approach and message just frikking infuriates me.

I forgot to mention that I also hate Metal Gear Solid. It's a Pac-Man game with a cringy anime theme, that people actually think is a stealth game despite the fact that it has goddamn boss fights. The gameplay is so horrendously simplistic that you get an exact timer on screen that tells you exactly when the AI will entirely forget that you ever existed. The dialogue is physically painful to listen to because of how embarrassingly Engrish it is. Characters are ridiculous and I don't believe it was on purpose no matter how much apologists try to tell me it's supposed to be satire. It's not good enough to count. And the pseudo-philosophical faux-deep themes they're trying to force are a dead giveaway that nobody thought it was a joke. The game has extremely out of place 4th wall breaks that only serve to point out how retarded everything is. If the unavoidable boss fights didn't disqualify it from being stealth to you, then the long staircase where you must mow down an army of pre-aggroed soldiers will. And if the button-mash QTE that is the binary test between two endings didn't convince you that it's one of the worst games you've ever played, then I suppose it's safe to say that you're probably excited for Death Stranding. There is nothing that can be below your standards. I don't just dislike the game, I'll probably dislike you if you like it.

GTA V is a big one for me. Never mind that the online took forever to come out, never mind that it ran into issues for several months after it did, never mind that the game sold so many units that only Minecraft and Tetris stand above it, the story was bad, the driving was bad, the shooting mechanics completely suck, and Franklin is the only character in the game that I didn't want to personally go into the game and shoot myself. GTA V might be popular, but I think it's the worst game that ever got popular, ever.

Oh so many. I couldn't get into typical FPS (Halo, COD, etc.) And I couldn't get into what I call movie games, (Stuff like Life Is Strange, Minecraft Story Mode.)
