‘HOLMGANG: Memories of the Forgotten’ Kickstarter Is Live

  • Development team contains veterans of games large and small.
  • A decent amount of lore already served up.
  • Could this be a crowdfunding homerun?

While Kickstarters happen all the time, it always seems to be around spring and late summer in this hemisphere that new game ideas start popping up en masse. While a lot of these are projects that will never reasonably meet their marks, and sadly enough, fewer still will reach the heights they’re hoping for, even with funding, now and then there are ones that come along that you just get a good feeling about. Right now, I have a good feeling about Holmgang: Memories of the Forgotten which just started its Kickstarter campaign. Comprised of veterans from several game companies including Rockstar Games, Electronic Arts, and 343 as some of the major names, developer Zerouno Games has come to Kickstarter with a trailer in tow and early details about the project they have planned.

Holmgang is a hack n’slash experience aiming to give each character their own unique spin. On top of that, players have full control over their character combo loadouts and individual skill trees so that even though you’re playing a tried and true genre, you get your own personal spin on the experience. While there is no formal gameplay yet, provided gifs and glances within Making off materials it looks like it could be promising. At a glance, I get vibes of Nightmare Creatures, Diablo, and that distinct feeling of beat-em-ups like Final Fight where each area is presented as somewhat of an arena of foes to tackle before you can move on. Basically, without relying entirely on referencing other games it reminds me of, it looks like it has the potential makings for a fun experience for the combo pros and button mashers alike.

As a whole, it’s far too early to tell just how many of these flavors arrive in the final product, but I have to say what’s giving me the good feeling is the brief teaser trailer. With attention-grabbing music and a visually pleasing art style that makes it appear like the visualization of some sort of legend, it does exactly what a teaser is supposed to do. It grabs the attention of the viewer, it sparks interest. I’ve got my fingers crossed we’ll see something good in the end for this.

If you’d like to learn more about the game, the Kickstarter page is a treasure trove of information including artwork and concept footage. The current goal is set at $45,000 and at the time of this coverage it has $4,043 so far with 78 backers and 27 days to go. Once you’ve checked it out, let us know down below what you think of the earliest looks at Holmgang: Memories of the Forgotten.
