‘I.G.I. Origins’ Coming in 2021

  • Will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
  • Think your way in and shoot your way out.
  • A prequel to the series.

Developer Antimatter Games and publisher Toadman Interactive have announced that their first-person stealth shooter I.G.I. Origins will release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam in 2021. This is the third entry in the I.G.I. series, and looks to go back to where it all started.

I.G.I. Origins is a prequel to 2000’s release Project I.G.I. Developers will encourage players to think their way in and shoot their way out. The aim is to create a high octane thrill ride, and it’ll take place in a spy fantasy world. Players will have access to gadgets and guns, while taking place in the 1980s. It’s up to you to unravel a conspiracy that threatens to send the world into nuclear annihilation.

You play as an agent code named “Regent,” who is part of active duty through MI6. Mimicking film, players will get to discover and explore the origins of the Institute of Geotactical Intelligence. Due to the critical responsibilities of national security, Regent will travel across the world to gather information. Your actions will determine who is a friend and who is an enemy as you race against the clock to stop the nuclear threat.

Back in 2017, the intellectual property rights to I.G.I. and the character of David Jones was acquired by Artplant, a studio founded by former Innerloop Studios employees. In May 2017, Artplant announced a new entry in development and promised to bring the freedom the series is known for. Publishing rights to the first two entries remain with Square Enix, who received it when they bought all of Eidos Interactive’s properties in 2009. The storyline of I.G.I. is as follows:

  • Project I.G.I. – The protagonist Jones, with the help of Anya, infiltrates the base of Jach Priboi in order to capture him and extract the knowledge of the stolen Warhead.
  • I.G.I.-2: Covert Strike – The game’s plot features a rogue Chinese General, “Wu Xing” as the primary antagonist. Xing orchestrates various events (such as armed robbery of advanced prototype technology from the Russian mafia) in order to get electromagnetic pulse (EMP) weaponry on a space rocket that he has launch control over.

I’ve never played nor heard of this series. If you have, how was it? Are you excited for I.G.I. Origins? The trailer looks great, reminds me of Metal Gear Solid. To stay up to date, make sure to follow the developers on Twitter, Facebook, Discord and their official website.
