Microsoft Wants to Develop More ‘Outer Worlds’ Games for Xbox
- Obsidian, the studio behind The Outer Worlds, joined Xbox Game Studios in 2018.
- The Outer Worlds was in development prior, and will not be exclusive.
- If Microsoft wants to make more games in the series, they will likely be only on Xbox.
Microsoft is ready to put more money behind Obsidian’s The Outer Worlds. The game does not come out until later this fall, but if it does well, more might be following it. Back in 2018, Microsoft announced that Obsidian, alongside companies like Ninja Theory, was joining the team of Xbox Game Studios, a group of now 15 studios that make Xbox and Microsoft Store exclusive games.
Speaking in an interview with Game Informer, head of Xbox Studios Matt Booty said that Microsoft believes that The Outer Worlds could be “an enduring franchise.” You can watch the full interview down below.
Answering a question about the potential for an Outer Worlds 2 as an Xbox exclusive, Booty said “I think that’d be that kind game. From what we’ve seen of the Outer Worlds, my hope is that that’s something we can build and that it really becomes an enduring franchise and it really starts to grow and we can help expand that.” There is the chance that it won’t be exclusive though, as Booty said that it depends. If they believe that the franchise will be better on multiple platforms, then they won’t tie it only to Xbox.
