Nintendo Direct E3 2019 Roundup

  • Two new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate characters revealed.
  • More Information on newly delayed Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
  • The Witches 3, Alien: Isolation, and more announced for Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo has always done their own thing. While big companies like Microsoft chose to hold off of major next generation announcements, promising that 2020 will be better, Nintendo instead dumps their whole heart into what they have, even if it isn’t always all good. This year’s event was packed full of information like always, with most of it being exciting looks at new content or content that is coming soon. Without further ado, let’s get into the show.

Luigi’s Mansion 3

A new feature in the Luigi’s Mansion franchise is on the horizon, and it appears to be using the full breadth of the Nintendo Switch’s features. Not only can the Luigi’s new Poltergust, G-00, suck up the malevolent ghosts, but it has a few new features. There is the slam ability, which allows Luigi to beat the crap out of these ghosts, destroying furniture and weakening the ghost in the process. Maybe this will show us new secrets as well. A second new feature is the suction shot, which fires a plunger with a rope that can be grabbed to move objects or defeat certain special ghosts. Luigi also uses the new burst feature, which emits a blast of air, knocking back the ghosts around him, giving him enough room to take them all out. Burst also knocks Luigi into the air, enabling him to use it as an evasive maneuver.

Luigi also has a handy ally working with him, Gooigi. Gooigi is a slimy version of Luigi with special strengths and weaknesses. Gooigi is immune to spikes, can fit through certain paths blocked to Luigi, and is easily destroyed by water. Gooigi can be a co-op buddy or an extra character to take control of.

Lastly, there will be an eight player co-op mode: The Scarescraper. Team up to defeat ghosts and discover missing toads.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 arrives later this year.

Dragon Quest Hero and Banjo-Kazooie Coming to Smash Ultimate

Not only did fans of Smash Ultimate get one Fighter’s Pass character announcement, they got two. The protagonist hero from Dragon Quest is arriving this summer, and the long awaited Banjo-Kazooie is arriving this fall. Each character looks incredibly unique, and is sure to spice up the game scene in ways we haven’t seen before. Check out both trailers below.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

With each new trailer, fans are only more excited for the fast approaching Fire Emblem: Three Houses. With this new trailer, we learn that the player’s time at the Officer’s Academy is just the beginning, and that war is coming to the land. You must protect your students, bring glory to your house, and prevent war from destroying the world as you know it. Fire Emblem: Three Houses arrives July 26th, 2019, a little over a month away.

Resident Evil 5 & 6

Two of the more recent Resident Evil games are coming to the Nintendo Switch. With the library of RE titles already available in some capacity, it only makes sense to bring in two more. RE5 and RE6 aren’t the most beloved installments in the franchise, but they hold special places in some people’s hearts, and their unique co-op elements make for great Nintendo Switch titles. Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 are coming to the Nintendo Switch this fall.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

With this year’s Nintendo Direct, we got more information about the highly anticipated new Animal Crossing game for Nintendo Switch. Some of the news was excellent, while some of it was understandable, but mildly disappointing. Animal Crossing: New Horizons will send players to a tropical island, where they will start with just a tent before gathering materials to build anywhere. Yes, that’s right. No longer are you bound to strict rules of location, anywhere you can fit it, it can be built.

Speaking of building, the game will also feature a robust crafting system. If you don’t want to craft things, you can also buy and sell items. Either way, doing just about anything will earn you Nook Miles, which can be exchanged for valuable luxury items.

If you’re missing some items or anything from your island settlement, don’t worry! You can have up to eight players on your island, and they have full access to their own inventories. This will allow for a large system of trading and a multiplayer economy to the game.

The one bit of news that fans were less excited for was the announcement of a delay to the game. The previously announced 2019 release has been pushed to March 20th, 2020. This happened because Nintendo wants to provide the best game possible without pushing their developers too hard.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order

You must assemble a team of the mightiest heroes in the universe to defeat Thanos’ vile commanders, the Black Order in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order. The game will be the next installation in the series after 10 years, but is taking a new approach to the series. This game does not follow the original story, like from Ultimate Alliance and Ultimate Alliance 2. Rather, this game will be taking more influences from the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as the original comics. The game will be released July 19th on the Nintendo Switch.

Astral Chain

This upcoming game from Bayonetta developer Platinum Games looks better and better every time a new trailer comes out. This trailer provided a few things, such as more details about the storyline of the game. Astral Chain follows players as a special security force in a Megacity created after a global catastrophe annihilated most of humanity. Using your Legions, otherworldly weapons, you must fight against those who would see our species eradicated, and in the process learn what is really going on in this world.

No More Heroes 3

Travis is back, and this time he’s ready to save the world again in No More Heroes 3. This is a direct follow up to Travis Strikes Again, and has the titular Travis Touchdown taking a much more classic approach to his enemies than in the previous title. It has been 10 long years since Travis has been back to Santa Destroy, and things have changed since he last saw it. There is now a massive island metropolis off the coast, and a mysterious object flying above the city.

No More Heroes 3 arrives in 2020.

Oninaki

Oninaki is a game about life, death, and beating stuff up. In this world, reincarnation is a part of life, and to grieve someone’s death is an affront to nature. Instead of grief, people are meant to be joyous. You play as a Watcher, a person who is tasked with aiding lost souls on their path to their next life. The lost souls you do battle with are powerful, and have a direct effect on the world around them. You can see a being I assume is a lost soul standing over a woman who is either dead or injured in the street. They are a real threat to people all over this world. Oninaki arrives on Nintendo Switch August 22nd.

Daemon X Machina

‘Big robots fighting smaller, equally large, and outrageous huge robots’ the game is coming to your Nintendo Switch very soon. Daemon X Machina is all about beating the ever-loving crap out of robots while flying in an equally destructive robot yourself. The game was officially revealed last year, and has since then seen the release of a pre-release demo. You must fight together with your team in order to defeat all the threats that come before you, including the potential for other groups of mercenaries to attack. Can you defeat the monstrous enemies of humanity before they overtake you? What secrets will you uncover about these machines? Who destroyed the Moon and bathed the Earth in blood-red light? Play Daemon X Machina September 13th to find out.

Empire of Sin

From the mind of iconic DOOM developer John Romero and prolific strategy developers Paradox Interactive comes a noir strategy title: Empire of Sin. In the world of prohibition-era Chicago, do you have what it takes to rule the underground? The game is being called character-driven and noir-inspired, putting you both in the middle of the pizazz and glamor of the roaring 20s and behind the scenes of the organized crime empires that kept it all propped up. Look for Empire of Sin on Nintendo Switch in Spring 2020.

Cadence of Hyrule

From the minds behind Crypt of the Necrodancer comes something similar, with a cast of fan-favorite characters from the Legend of Zelda franchise. Play as Link or Zelda as you defeat enemies in the classic Crypt of the Necrodancer hybrid rhythm-melee combat. What secrets have caused these worlds to collide? Will they ever find themselves separated again? Find out when Cadence of Hyrule releases on June 13th.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games: Tokyo 2020

The classic Nintendo title is returning to take the gold! Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games: Tokyo 2020 is the next installment in the sports game no one knew they wanted when it first released. Play as Mario, Sonic, and all their friends, competing for a spot on the podium. This game will feature four new events for the Tokyo olympics: Karate, Surfing, Sports Climbing, and Skateboarding. This is on top of a roster of many of the classic events from games past. Look out for Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games: Tokyo 2020 this November.

The Witcher 3

People said it couldn’t be done. You couldn’t take one of the most critically acclaimed RPGs of this generation, one so chock-full of content, so chock-full of adventure, and distill it down to fit on the Nintendo Switch. Well, The Witcher 3 is here, #Swticher fans. I never doubted you, and even if you yourselves might’ve had some moments of doubt, you have been rewarded. The Witcher 3 Complete Edition, including all of the free content and paid DLC packs, is coming to the Nintendo Switch later this year. We will update you as soon as we have a confirmed release date.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics

Not only is the cult classic film The Dark Crystal is getting a new Netflix series; it’s also getting a strategy game, releasing on the Nintendo Switch. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics, is a strategy game following the series story on a different level. The game will not only allow players to experience the world of Thra like they can in the upcoming series, but will also expand upon the tale with new stories, new playable characters, and new locales to explore. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics is coming in Quarter Four of 2019.

Upcoming First and Third Titles

There are a load of games coming soon to the Switch from third-party developers, aside from big ticket titles like The Witcher 3. These were all shown off during a sizzle reel, and contained things like Alien: Isolation, The Sinking City, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Dead by Daylight, Spyro: Reignited Trilogy, Elder Scrolls: Blades, and more. These are a mix of games that had been previously announced, new upcoming titles, and ports of older games to the system. All of these games have varied release dates or release windows.

Remakes and Remasters

This E3 in general seems to have an awful lot of games being remade or remastered. Not only was Square Enix’s conference focused heavily on Final Fantasy VII: Remake, this time, Nintendo gave us a taste of some old classics being remastered, remade, or even brought to the West for the first time. The list of games includes the Contra Anniversary Collection, The Last Remnant Remastered, Final Fantasy VIII Remastered, Romancing SaGa 3, SaGa SCARLET GRACE: AMBITIONS , Collection of Mana, Trials of Mana, and Panzer Dragoon: Remake. These games all got their own respective trailer, but they are all just remasters, remakes, and/or Western ports. All of these games have various release dates and windows.

Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (Remake)

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening remake is coming soon. The remake will be including a new feature: dungeon building. Around the world of Link’s Awakening, you will find several tiles, small pieces of dungeons. These pieces can be combined to create custom dungeons to be overcome by you and your friends. The game was a big hit when it first released, and the updated artstyle is very well polished and reflects the original title while putting a new spin on it. Link’s Awakening arrives on Nintendo Switch September 20th.

Contra Rogue Ops

Not only are fans of the run-and-gun action series Contra getting a collection of classic titles, but they’re getting a brand new game with a wide cast of characters, including a cybernetically enhanced Panda. This super-violent, high-octane game offers single-player and co-op action. Contra: Rogue Ops launches later this year, on September 24th.

Breath of the Wild 2

Wait, what? You read that right: the best selling Legend of Zelda game ever, surpassing Twilight Princess, is getting a direct sequel. What this means, no one is fully sure. This footage was revealed through the classic E3 “one more thing” gimmick. This trailer appears to be shaping the world in a new, major way. Hyrule Castle is taking flight and something sinister has been awoken. Whatever this dark power is, Zelda and Link will need all their power to defeat it. The game is currently in development with no known release window.

Breath of the Wild 2 is confirmed for using the EXACT same map. That’s kinda a bummer since the biggest thing in the original was exploring the land and discovering everything. Now that we’ve already seen EVERYTHING how can the possibly justify reusing the map?

  2. Most excited for the Dark Crystal game. If they inter-cut live action like they did in the trailer I’ll be buying a Switch. Least impressed with the Panzer Dragoon remake. Those graphics look like play-doh and I really wish they had incorporated a cel shaded version of Moebius art.

Props for gaining Witcher 3 and Alien Isolation.

  3. NoMoreHeroes3 wins it for me → Can’t wait for more batshit insane boss fights and beam katana duels ♥

    Welcome back, Travis! :’)

  4. Nintendo’s showing was superb. They had a huge variety of games ensuring that there was something for everybody watching. Both Smash reveals were great. Astral Chain looks sublime and was the highlight for me.

Breath of The Wild getting a sequel was very surprising. I guess I have enough time to complete the original.
