‘Overwatch’ Book ‘The Hero of Numbani’ Coming Next Year

  • Book will center around Efi Oladele, creator of Orisa.
  • Additional appearances from Lucio and Doomfist.
  • First novel entry for the franchise.

Blizzard Entertainment has been known over the years for branching narratives over the course of their games. Whether they be digital shorts, comics, or any of the dozens of books tied to their IPs their video games have had a lasting impact for the die-hard fans that wanted to learn more about the worlds and universes of the games they play. So perhaps it’s not surprising that Overwatch is finally on track to get its first novel.

The Hero of Numbani will debut Overwatch’s first steps into formal reading, published by Scholastic and aimed at fans of the team-based FPS game. The Hero of Numbani is a story about Efi Oladele, the young girl responsible for the creation of the quadruped robot Orisa. While in the game proper, Orisa has the spotlight as a playable character that blurs lines between tank and support, the novel aims to focus on Efi and a conflict being stirred up by the villainous Doomfist. The description reads as follows on Amazon:

In the technologically advanced African city of Numbani, in the not-so-distant future, humans live in harmony with humanoid robots known as omnics. But when a terrorist tries to shatter that unity, a hero named Efi Oladele rises!

Efi has been making robots since she was little-machines to better her community and improve people’s lives. But after she witnesses Doomfist’s catastrophic attack on the city’s OR15 security bots, Efi feels the call to build something greater: a true guardian of Numbani.

While Doomfist sows discord between humans and omnics, Efi engineers an intelligent and compassionate robot, Orisa, named after the powerful spirits who guide her people. Orisa has a lot to learn before she’s ready to defeat Doomfist, but Efi has some learning to do, too, especially when it comes to building and being a hero. With Doomfist rallying his forces, and the military powerless to stop him, can Efi mold Orisa into the hero of Numbani before it’s too late?

The novel is being written by author Nicky Drayden, and will include additional appearances from Efi’s creation Orisa, roller-blading hero Lucio, and the villain with a killer right-hook, Doomfist. The Kindle edition is listed on Amazon now, but knowing Blizzard, I’m sure hardback and softcover versions will be available for pre-order closer to the planned release date of May 5th, 2020.

The background lore has been something that fans of Overwatch have wanted to see expanded upon for some time now, with the initial reveal of Overwatch and several digital shorts expanding on the canon of the game, the conflict with the Omnics, the split of Overwatch and Blackwatch. We’ve seen heroes become villains, villains become heroes, and Junkrat just living for chaos. With Overwatch expanding into literature, fans will have a chance to see the narrative depth behind a game that on the surface is just a fun team-based shooter.
