‘Resident Evil 3’ Remake Sees Return to Form One Weapon
- Replaying the Resident Evil 3 Demo, I noticed the knife was much stronger.
- Recent comments by Peter Fabiano confirm the weapon is unbreakable.
- Now that’s a knife!
If you’re a veteran of the Resident Evil series, then you know that the secret weapon in almost every franchise was the trusty combat knife. Whether you’re trying to conserve ammo or you’re pushing yourself to incredible lengths to face down even the most terrifying of foes, the knife is a series staple. My most preferred method over the years has been to use the knife on zombies or other slow-moving enemies until I have at least four magazines worth of pistol ammo, and it was usually enough to get by. That method went flying out the window with the Resident Evil 2 remake, where knives become more of a defensive weapon than an offensive one. You could attack with them, yes, but their low durability made them unreliable. They were great for escaping the clutches of something about to sink their fangs into your face though, along with stun grenades and normal grenades.
Going into the demo for the upcoming Resident Evil 3 remake, I figured they may follow a similar approach. I accepted the knife was probably meant to be used more defensively. It turns out I was wrong, as the more I replayed the more I noticed the knife seemed to be indestructible. It lacked any major damage dealing on moving targets, but when a zombie was down on the ground it was a perfect way to deal some extra damage and conserve ammo. At first I speculated that it may just be for the sake of the demo, but it was recently revealed by producer Peter Fabiano via Game Informer that this was a deliberate change:
We kept the knife inexhaustible, so you can use it forever. We’re dealing with survival horror and everything is exhaustible. You run out of bullets. You run out of herbs. You run out of all the items you can use. So if you did run out of everything, what would you have? The knife. The director always wanted to make it so that you at least have your trusty knife. That’s always something you can rely on.
Considering that Nemesis is far harder to evade than Mr. X, the fact we can save more of our ammo for slowing down Raccoon City’s most terrifying monster is certainly a blessing. Every bullet counts, so it’s time to brush up on your knifing skills for whatever your preferred method of dealing with the zombie outbreak is.
