Rumors Of The Next ‘Call of Duty’ Have Begun Again

  • Post on social media claims title is a Black Ops soft reboot.
  • Eurogamer claims own sources have confirmed this reality.
  • Hiding in plain sight?

While Modern Warfare keeps getting bigger in popularity (and in update size) it’s about that time of year again when the Call of Duty fanbase starts looking to the future. While Modern Warfare is proving itself to have the potential for longlasting staying power by weaving the narrative through its multiplayer components, including the widely acclaimed Warzone mode, there’s always going to be that batch of players that wonder what Activision is putting out next. On May 19th, rumors of a Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War began circulating on social media, seemingly originating from this tweet.

At face value, this tweet is nothing. How many fake box arts and fan mockups have we seen online over the years? Most of them are way better than just slapping “Cold War” onto an existing box art. However, the twist comes in the form of Eurogamer saying that their own sources are saying that is correct. As always, take everything with a grain of salt until confirmed by Activision themselves but it is interesting and possibly something hiding in plain sight.

The recently accessible bunkers in Warzone are indeed Russian bunkers, and at face value that’s not surprising. The entire region of Verdansk within the context of Modern Warfare is Russian territory, literally everything built there is of Russian make right? But look back to Taylor Kurosaki’s comments about how Warzone is supposed to be a single constant between the franchise going forward.

Could the opening of the bunkers be eluding to the next Call of Duty title? Will it indeed be Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War? We’ll just have to wait and see, but since it’s getting close to the time of year where we normally get the big reveal anyway I don’t think we’ll have to wait long.

Given how the Black Ops branch of the franchise started out with strong narratives in the first two games before losing its way, would you like to see a soft reboot for Black Ops in the same way Modern Warfare received one? Let us know down below.
