‘Shenmue 3’ Refunds Begin Soon

  • Ys Net details the refunding process.
  • PC players only have a two week window to request a refund.
  • Refunds may not be issued until up to 3 months after the requests.

Shenmue 3 has taken quite a tumble, and the game isn’t even out yet. It was an often requested third entry into a very niche series, which finally came to life through the help of crowdfunding via kickstarter and will soon be coming home on Playstation 4 and PC.

But many PC players aren’t happy with Ys Net’s decision to take the game to the Epic Store instead of Steam, and the company found themselves as one of several sparks that ignited the PC’s very own version of platform wars. Demands for refunds from Kickstarter backers were swift, as when they contributed to the project they were under the impression they’d be a Steam release of Shenmue 3. Ys Net revealed that they would issue refunds in the future to those unpleased with the decision, with Epic CEO Tim Sweeny offering to cover any losses they sustained from these refunds.

The refunds are finally expected to begin soon, with Ys Net’s latest post on the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter page. The announcement also covers PS4 region change requests, and a survey necessary for all backers of the game to complete for their desired changes. You can find the most important bits of the announcement below:

Survey Period

The survey period is planned to be up two weeks long. Survey period details will be announced in the survey open update.

Changes to rewards will not be available after surveys close, so please be sure to respond within the survey period. Address changes may be made up until shipping begins.

Concerning Refunds

Refunds will be honored for backers who had selected a PC version and are not satisfied with the proposed reward options.

Refund Request Processing

Refund requests will be accepted only through the backer survey during the survey period. Processing details will be announced at the start of the survey period.

Refund processing timing may vary depending on payment service and transaction status. It may take up to 20 business days to 3 months from the time the refund request is made until the refund transaction is completed.

We promise to proceed with refund request processing promptly and reliably, however, due to the fact that the campaign is now 4 years on, along with the complexity of the transactions and payment service system arrangements, we ask for your understanding that processing times may vary depending on individual transaction circumstances.

The survey period is expected to begin mid-September, which is just around the corner, and if you are seeking a refund, the request must be made in that period. Are you a backer of Shenmue 3? Has Ys Net’s decision to go to the Epic Games Store made you desire a refund? Be sure to let us know down below in the comments.

  1. The refund period request is suspiciously short, but at least it’s there. This will be yet another high profile example of why people shouldn’t crowdfund games under the current conditions.

  2. YsNet has sent out a very detailed email to all backers, saying plainly that there would be a 2 week window to request a refund. How is that not enough time?

An additional 3 months to process said refunds is not long at all considering the original donations were made 4 years ago, and they are stating the longest amount of time they could imagine it taking to cover themselves in the instance it does end up taking that long. Considering most people have different payment cards, paypal accounts, etc, it’s not as simple as reversing the transaction.

Considering the Epic Store and Steam store both are housed on Windows and the game itself will be the same regardless, they shouldn’t have even bothered with the refunds. The vocal minority of PC gamer brats are still whining anyway, so they should have taken the money and ran with it, honestly. Real Shenmue fans want Shenmue 4 and don’t give a **** about which launcher you have to use to play Shenmue 3.

  3. I am glad to see they are finally giving out refunds. Some people may say that it doesn’t matter, but when money is involved even the smallest of promises should be fulfilled unless there is a refund in the waiting. It is shame that it had to become such a struggle and a big issue. If the unsatisfied people could have just gotten their refund from the beginning and it have been done with, there would have been less fuel for the fire.
