‘Shenmue III’ Gets Its First DLC This Month
- Pick it up on January 21st.
- Run in different courses.
- Two additional playable runners.
Shenmue III was a title few expected to ever happen. Following its release, the title has underperformed in sales. The future for the series is in question. Despite that, when concerning another entry in the fan favorite series, we learned earlier last year that there would be a Season Pass. Developer Ys Net and publisher Deep Silver have announced that on the 21st of January, the first piece of downloadable content for Shenmue III will release.
Battle Rally will cost players $7.99, unless you have purchased the Complete DLC Collection, then you’ll get immediate access to the DLC when it releases. Shenmue III is currently available on PlayStation 4 and PC exclusively via The Epic Games Store. Death Rally is expected to add fresh activities for players to enjoy, allowing Shenmue III owners to compete in races. Run across China against other contestants as you try to come in first place in various courses. These head to head battles are a first for the series, and an unexpected activity to come to Shenmue.
Shenmue has primarily focused its story on protagonist Ryo Hazuki, but for the first time in its history, players will also be able to fill the shoes of treasure hunter Wuying Ren and Ryo’s sparring partner Wei Zhen. I’m interested in knowing if playing as these other characters adds any different gameplay options. Is one faster than the other? This may not be the kind of downloadable content players were expecting, or wanted, but at least we’re getting something. Shenmue III hasn’t been the smoothest release for fans.
The Epic Games Store exclusivity wasn’t taken particularly well from fans, especially after having preordered on Steam beforehand, and refunds were forced to be given. Then backers of the title on Kickstarter learned that they would not be receiving the preorder bonuses like those on PC would be getting. At least we got a nice trailer at TGS 2019. Despite all of this, at least we know that Shenmue is special.
How do you feel about Battle Rally? Were you expecting something different? What would you like to see come to Shenmue III? Honestly, I’m excited because it’s something different. I’m sure we’ll get new story content in the future, I’m just not sure we’ll get Shenmue IV. To stay up to date on Shenmue, and its future, follow the developers on Twitter and their official website.
