The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening Remake Announced!

The Nintendo Switch is already home to one of the most critically acclaimed Zelda titles of all time, Breath of the Wild, which was released back in March 2017. I don’t think anyone expected for another Zelda game to be released so soon, let alone a remake of one of the most beloved titles in the series—The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. But Triforce bless us all, here we are with an official announcement from Nintendo, complete with a trailer (Goombas are back!) that showcases a charming, cute, and frankly downright beautiful new graphics engine for the title.

The trailer retreads familiar areas and faces, and at times the nostalgia is almost too much to bear. Fans of the old Game Boy (and Game Boy DX) release will rejoice, and newcomers will be treated to one of the most unique Zelda crossover titles ever made, a title that explores the series roots and instills an ancient gaming joy that has been missing from the Zelda properties for quite some time. More news, comparison videos, and information to follow as we learn more about this upcoming Nintendo Switch release.

    I’m very excited for this.

  5. * “Game Boy” 🙂

…and I wouldn’t exactly say that the switch is home for Breath of the Wild, as it was a Wii U port.

But you know, I’ll probably buy it 🙂

  6. I think Zelda has done a fantastic job for the most part; but something has started to disappear from recent titles. Maybe i’m just getting old. But i definitely played the majority of Zelda titles and right around Twilight princess i noticed the sort of.. mystic… ethereal quality started to disappear. I don’t what else to call it. But it has kinda vanished from the games. BOTW was a fantastic game, don’t get me wrong. But the otherworldly feel of the game that absolutely blew my mind when i was younger didn’t make an appearance to me at all.

That is pretty much my sentiment as far as the most recent Zelda titles. BOTW is a great game, but I just never felt it like I did the older titles from NES and SNES. The trailer for this new game though actually gave me a little bit of that nostalgia feel that I’ve always wanted out of Zelda. Maybe that’s part of it though, playing those titles when they came out and the newness of it all.

      • I feel ya but that is what I like with this specific remaster is that we will have a full brand new Zelda (BOTW) and a remaster of a classic to go get that nostalgia factor for those who played Zelda back in the day. Also it seems the game play is completely different. for me it’ll be my 3rd Zelda of all time considering I have not finished BOTW yet so I don’t have that nostalgia factor for Zelda in particular BUT still I feel ya.

So… I’m the only one that doesn’t like the aesthetic of the game???

  8. Its a good thing for me then that I never played the original.

This is my all-time favorite Zelda, so while the presentation trailer looked amazing (and I loved the art style they’re going with this time!) of course I have some hopes for this game.

–Photographs. The Game Boy Printer isn’t a thing any more but I hope they still let us take pictures with the Mouse, saved into our Switch album. Would these photographs be in the art style of the new intro?

–Dedicated buttons for items, ala OoT 3D, so we don’t have to constantly switch between the Roc’s Feather, Shovel, etc. Probably a given, since the Switch controllers all have a lot more buttons to work with.

–Keep the difficulty intact in the existing dungeons, and maybe include a super hard dungeon that requires use of all items.

I’m already liking what I saw with the slight change of the scene where Link meets the owl at the Mysterious Woods, where he lands in the tree instead of on the ground. A bit nervous but eagerly anticipating this game’s release later this year!

Anybody played the original Gameboy Color version? If you actually go in the shop and took an item and didn’t pay any rupees and then come back in the store owner actually kills you and you will get a game over. Ahh the memories. I wonder how does that scene plays out in the remake if that particular scene is going to be in?

    • Oh yeah, I remember that. Your name is changed to “Thief” too iirc.

I ‘m really looking forward to this; the are style is gorgeous too.

  11. Loved this game as a kid. I got it on my B-day with the super gameboy.

What a game it was wayback and I hope they managed to capture the same magic with some brand new dungeons and bosses.

  13. I wonder if the no-death secret ending from the original will be in this new one.
