Survival games can be fun, but they’re also incredibly numerous right now. With most of them also being in early access, it’s hard to decide what is worth taking a chance with and what is a hard pass from the start. How many Day Z and Rust clones have we seen afterall? But then you have ones that you cross your fingers and remain hopeful that the game ends up becoming something you’d want to buy one day. That’s the boat I’m in with Volcanoids. Released into Steam Early Access last year, I’ve checked in on it off and on to see if there was anything jumping out that may elevate the experience.
A steampunk survival game about mining out a volcanic island with massive drills? On paper, sign me up, and its latest update is dragging me a bit closer into giving it a shot with the introduction of co-op in the latest update. Along with a trailer to mark the event, the developers released a full statement on Steam that can be read in full here. Below you’ll find the key takeaway of the update from the “What’s New” section.
To play the new co-op mode all you need to do is choose one person that will be hosting the game and take on the role of the crew captain – ideally, the one that has the strongest PC, since it has to manage everything. Once the game starts, others can join through the “join game” screen and start playing. Quests are completely synchronized within the crew, so everyone can take part in managing the drillship systems, fighting COGs, or gathering resources.
For now, the crew can own only own one drillship but that will change in future updates. Crew captain is the only person that can save/load the game. If the captain decides to end the game, it will also disconnect all the other players. Any new player that joins the game will spawn directly to the drillship, or into the submarine in case the crew has not claimed one yet (or lost one).
I’m this close to giving it a shot, the only thing keeping me from it is that is how busy things have been lately. But if you have some free time of your own and you don’t mind jumping into an early access game, Volcanoids is on sale right now for $14.99 on Steam. If nothing else I’m just happy to see this game still getting updates where so many other survival games seem like they cash in quickly and then have nothing to show for it.
